Being NORA’s CEO is pretty much like being Santa Claus. I am the lucky one getting a lot of positive attention for delivering nice presents to the AI community, while all the helpers who really have done the hard work are less visible. The AI researchers, educators and innovators of the NORA network are the ones producing the presents that I often have the pleasure of providing to the community. You are the one making AI research, innovation and education available to us all. The level of engagement and dedication from the community has far surpassed my expectations. So, when I am now able to say that 2021 has been no less than a fantastic year for NORA, it is all because of the contributions from you!

The first volume of the pan-Nordic journal Nordic Machine Intelligence (NMI) is out! NMI is a non-commercial, peer-reviewed, open-access journal. The journal will publish a wide range of articles related to promoting research and education within all aspects of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Robotics.
The winners of NORA’s first dataset challange were announced in November 2021. MedAI: Transparency in Medical Image Segmentation was a challenge held in connection with the Nordic AI Meet conference and focused on medical image segmentation and transparency in machine learning (ML)-based systems.
The Research Council of Norway (NFR) recently announced that the Norwegian Artificial Intelligence Cloud (NAIC) will receive funding. The infrastructure will be the most powerful AI infrastructure in Norway. It will meet the AI needs of academia, SMEs, larger industry, startups and public administration. Gard Thomassen (UiO) is the project lead.
On 17th and 18th of November 2021, NORA held its first Annual Conference in Bergen. More than 100 researchers from across Norway came together to one of Norway’s most important meeting places for the AI-community.
For the first time ever, autonomous drilling is demonstrated on a full-scale offshore type drilling rig. The autonomous system decides and executes by itself every action that shall be taken and this without human intervention.
On 1st and 2nd of November, NORA in collaboration with CLAIRE and Research Council of Norway, hosted more than 100 young researchers at the Nordic Young Researchers Symposium (NordicAIMEET). The main purpose of the conference was to provide a platform for young AI researchers to exchange ideas, build collaborations and form a Nordic approach for building AI solutions for the societal good.

If you haven’t heard it before, make sure to memorize the term Protein Folding! It is one of the great mysteries of life, and Artificial Intelligence just solved the problem – in what has been described as Artificial Intelligence’s greatest achievements to date. The tools used to solve this mystery are accessible to researchers, which will contribute to further new and important research and discoveries in this field. And NORA was first to hold a large-scale open event about the discovery with over 600 participants from around the world!
BigInsight, SIRIUS, DataScience@UiO and the newly established dScience centre would like to welcome the data science community to an evening of socialisation, learning and entertainment after a long hiatus. The prime minister will attend the official opening of dScience.
