The first volume of NMI was published on November 1st 2021, and published the results from the MedAI: Transparency in Medical Image Segmentation challange.
Transparency in Medical Image Segmentation was a challenge held in connection with the Nordic AI Meet conference in November 2021 that focused on medical image segmentation and transparency in machine learning (ML)-based systems. NORA proposed three tasks to meet specific gastrointestinal image segmentation challenges collected from experts within the field, including two separate segmentation scenarios and one scenario on transparent ML systems. The latter emphasized the need for explainable and interpretable ML algorithms. NORA provided a development dataset for the participants to train their ML models, tested on a concealed test dataset.
The challenge gathered huge interest among young researchers and a total of 17 papers were submitted, answering the challenge.
- I think the NMI journal is a unique opportunity for the Scandinavian countries to stand out with their great work. In addition, it was a lot of fun working with all the great people on the journal, says Michael Riegler, Chief Research Scientist at Simula and Assistant Editor of NMI.
NMI is a collaborative project. Anne Håkansson (UiT) is NMI’s Editor-in-Chief. Morten Goodwin (UiA), Klas Pettersen (NORA) and Michael Riegler (SimulaMet) are the journal’s Assistant Editors. Bjørn-Jostein Singstad at Oslo University Hospital is responsible for the journal.
- The journal will lead to increased collaboration within AI in the Nordic countries, positioning Nordic AI as recognized and strong brand. The collaboration will be further strengthened by the annual conference Nordic Artificial Intelligence Young Researchers Symposium – Nordic AIMEET, says Klas H. Pettersen, CEO of NORA and assistant editor of NMI.
NMI is published through FRITT - A publication service for researchers and groups at University of Oslo (UiO) who want to establish a new scholarly Open Access journal or to convert an existing journal to Open Access.
