- This conference shows that Bergen really is a power center for artificial intelligence. Here, everything is in place for research and innovation and cooperation between the public sector, business and academia, says Vice-Chancellor at UiB, and head of the steering group for UiB AI, Pinar Heggernes.

What is possible, what is legal, and what is wise were the three questions that the AI conference Intelligent Bergen addressed on Friday 3rd of November. Several hundred participants from Bergen's business, academia and the public sector heard, among other things, how artificial intelligence is changing the Norwegian public sector and business. The opening lecture was given by the CEO of NORA, Klas H. Pettersen, who took the conference participants through the broad outlines of what has happened in the field in recent years, and the way forward.

Possible, legal and wise?

During the section "What is possible?", several exciting examples of how artificial intelligence can be used in both the public and private sectors were presented. On part two "What is law?" the audience was introduced to what legislation at national and European level has, and will have to say for Norwegian businesses in the future, as well as which ethical and legal guidelines for artificial intelligence the businesses themselves should establish.

Once the questions about what is possible and what is legal were answered, the question of what is wise was illuminated. The presenters pointed out the enormous possibilities that exist by using artificial intelligence, but also pointed out that perhaps one should not exploit all possibilities, but rather limit some areas.

At the end of the conference, leaders from the various parts took part in a panel discussion on whether there is cause for concern, or whether we should be optimistic. And although the panel was somewhat divided on the questions, everyone agreed that we must use the tools that come in a good and safe way, and that it must be done within the laws and regulations that apply at all times.

- I am very satisfied with the conference and the presenters. We have received a lot of good feedback during the breaks. The participants have received new input, learned a lot, listened to interesting discussions and gained new perspectives. The conference is an important meeting place, where we can bring about new collaborations across the disciplines and the public sector, business, culture and academia here in Bergen, says Pinar Heggernes.

The conference is organized by UiB AI in collaboration with the Norwegian Cognitive Center, Health Bergen and Bergen municipality
