Advisory Expert Group established in the Initial Phase of the Norwegian AI Initiative

The Research Council has established an advisory expert group in the early phase of the Norwegian governments recent AI initiative, from October 2023 to January 2024.

For the next few weeks, the Research Council has assembled a broadly composed advisory expert group, consisting of Tanja Storsul, who leads the group, Arnoldo Frigessi, Cathrine Pihl Lyngstad, Eirik Andreassen, Ieva Martinkenaite, Inga Strümke, Jill W. Rettberg, John Krogstie, Klas Pettersen, Olav Lysne, Petter Bae Brandtzæg, Signe Riemer-Sørensen, and Tobias Mahler.

It is a short and intensive process, and no later than November 15, the group will produce a document describing the current situation: where is the greatest need for research and research-based expertise in AI, where does Norway have specific advantages in advancing the forefront of research, and what are the expectations for the AI initiative? What should be the footprint of the AI initiative by 2030? By December 20th, the expert group will write a joint document with proposals for measures to meet the expectations of the AI initiative. There are two breakfast meetings taking place in November and January, where the expert group will inform about their input.

The research initiative will have three main tracks:

  • Research on the consequences of artificial intelligence and other digital technologies for society. Key themes will include democracy, trust, ethics, economy, legal rights, regulations, privacy, education, arts, and culture.

  • Digital technologies as a research field in themselves, including research on artificial intelligence, digital security, next-generation ICT, new sensors, and quantum technology.

  • Research on how digital technologies can be used for innovation in the business and public sectors and how artificial intelligence can be applied in research across various fields of study.

The Research Council invites everyone who wishes to do so to provide input through participation in input meetings and/or by submitting written input. The deadline for submitting written input is November 9th, 2023, at midnight. Follow this link to see the input form.
