Mitt forskningsopphold ved Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) begynte, som seg hør og bør, med en god del usikkerhet. Planleggingen tok litt lenger tid enn antatt, og en stund var jeg ikke helt sikker på hvordan besøket kom til å bli. Sett med tilbakeblikk, var det kanskje den beste mulige introduksjonen til et forskningsopphold hos en gruppe som jobber med kvantifisering av usikkerhet. Heldigvis var usikkerheten midlertidig: Med støtte fra NORA, HIDA, KIT, og kollegaer involvert i organiseringen av utvekslingen, falt ting til slutt på plass — og det som fulgte var en givende periode med forskning, nye idéer, akademiske samtaler og liv i Karlsruhe.

NORA samarbeider med Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA) om et forskningsutvekslingsprogram mellom Norge og Tyskland. Alle de 18 forskningssentrene i Helmholtz Association er åpne for samarbeid, og det er en utmerket mulighet for PhD-studenter og postdoktorer med arbeidskontrakt hos en av NORA-partnerne til å oppleve en ny kultur og et nytt vitenskapelig miljø. Postdoktor Qixia Zhang ved UiT – Norges arktiske universitet, benyttet seg av denne muligheten og fortalte oss om sine erfaringer:
