#29 Fish & AI

Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that has immense potential within the fishing industry, considering the amount of data that is currently being collected. Consider for instance data on migration patterns that can be used to optimize catch, image processing that can be used to identify and classify fish species, satelite images that can be used to monitor illegal fishing activities, etc. Furthermore, by applying data data on fish and ocean, we can know more about environmental impact and status in specific areas, as well as existing opportunities and challenges amongst life underwater. Preserving and protecting life below water represents a vital block in the Sustainable Development Goals, namely in SDG14, which is also important in reaching SDG2, zero hunger, and SDG12, achieving responsible production and consumption.

#28: Innovation Project in the Industrial Sector (IPN)

What does it take for a startup to become funded as an innovation project in the industrial sector? The purpose of innovation projects, according to the NRC, is to provide a “funding instrument that provides grants to business-led innovation projects that make extensive use of research and development (R&D) activities. The Innovation Project is to lead to renewal and sustainable value creation for the project’s business partners. Funding should also generate socioeconomic benefits by making new knowledge and solutions available” (NRC, 2021).

In NORA, we actively strive to improve the position of and increase the visibility of women within the field of AI. By increasing the visibility of women actively contributing in the field of AI in Norway, we aim to inspire a more inclusive agenda within the otherwise male-dominated field of AI, to ensure equality for future generations. Our goal is to bring awareness by promoting female role models, and by portraying the breadth of opportunities for AI in society at large. During this NORA.startup webinar, we will bring together representatives from startups and research to address the gender disparity in tech startups and research and discuss initiatives to ensure inclusivity and diversity in AI for the future.

#23 AI, Misinformation and Social Entrepreneurship

The Facebook Whistleblower, Frances Haugen recently made the world understand that Facebook has a long way to go to become a responsible social platform. This included a lack of handling misinformation and the lack of resources dedicated to handle misinformation in different languages. It was also in late 2021 that the Norwegian Data Protection Authority decided to leave Facebook following their public statement: “Risk assessment: Should the Norwegian Data Protection Authority create a Page on Facebook?” Many questions follow as to what the alternatives should be to communicate with the public on social platforms. Can social entrepreneurship from a startup handling misinformation contribute to making online platforms safer? Should we help Facebook understand the Norwegian language, or do we simply have to build a platform for citizens ourselves? Can a regulatory AI sandbox help?
