In his doctoral work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), he developed methods to improve positioning accuracy using satellite navigation. While the research addressed technical challenges in dense urban environments, this talk will focus less on algorithms and more on the process of turning research into something that can create real-world value.
Many researchers encounter similar questions when considering commercialization:
• How do you identify opportunities where academic research can solve real problems?
• When and how should intellectual property be protected?
• What changes when moving from scientific validation to product validation?
• How can a PhD project be structured to enable impact beyond publications?
Using the SmartNav project as a case study — a positioning engine that evolved from doctoral research toward market validation — Ardeshir Mohamadi will reflect on key lessons learned. These include forming a cross-functional team, working with industry stakeholders, navigating IP and patents, securing innovation funding, and advancing a prototype through Technology Readiness Levels (TRL).
The webinar aims to provide practical insights for early-stage researchers who are curious about translating research into tangible impact, while maintaining scientific integrity.
Bio:
Ardeshir Mohamadi is a Product Lead and Scientist in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), specializing in high-precision positioning technologies.
At the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), his doctoral research focuses on improving positioning robustness in dense urban environments using mass-market and automotive-grade GNSS receivers. Alongside his research, he led the SmartNav commercialization initiative, advancing a GNSS positioning engine from research prototypes toward real-world demonstrations in collaboration with NTNU Technology Transfer.
His work bridges scientific research and product development, with a strong interest in translating deep technical innovation into practical solutions.
