First research school dedicated to the societal impact of AI
NORA-HS will be Norway’s first research school dedicated to the societal impact of AI. It matters because we need a deeper understanding of how artificial intelligence is shaping society, an area where knowledge is still limited. Themes such as governance, safety, democracy, and more will be at the heart of the research school.
- I’m pleased that we have assembled a highly competent board, and I look forward to welcoming PhD students to join us, says Liv Dingsør, Chair of the Board for NORA-HS.
The Research School will offer summer and winter schools, case competitions, an AI Safety Day, exchange programs and more. All activities are free for members, and financial support is available for attending specific conferences/activities and for travel and accommodation. (Students from non-NORA partners can still join, but will not be eligible for financial support.)
Preliminary Outline of Events for 2026

Benefits of joining the Research School
- Academic and Skill Development Opportunities
- Networking and Collaboration Activities
- Innovation and Industry Engagement
The funding for the research school has been granted through The Norwegian Government´s new initiative to promote Artificial Intelligence (The AI-billion). The initiative has three main tracks; Social Consequences, Technology and Innovation. The Social Consequences track includes research into the consequences of artificial intelligence and other digital technologies for society. Key themes will be democracy, trust, ethics, economics, legal certainty, legal regulations, privacy, teaching and learning, art and culture.
Behind the Scenes
The NORA-HS Board consists of: Liv Dingsør (Didital Norway), Barbara Wasson (UiB), Malcom Langford (UiO), Ida Jahr (INN), Signe Riemer-Sørensen (SINTEF), Bernhard Enjolras (Institute for Social Research, Lars Ailo Bongo (UiT), Edmund Henden (OsloMet), Michael Riegler (SIMULA), Christoph Lutz (BI), Hege Stensrud Høsøyen (National Library of Norway) and Heidi Dahl (Posten).

Project leader for the Research School is Taina Bucher (UiO). Bucher researches how algorithms affect power relations in society, and how we imagine artificial intelligence. At HumAIn, she works to analyze and challenge current narratives about artificial intelligence – to contribute to a more just and sustainable future.
